2010 UPY Mission Trip

June 6-13, 2010  •  St. Joseph, Missouri

We will be partnering with InterServ, a faith-based, not-for-profit, human service organization with Methodist roots dating back to 1909.  InterServ provides comprehensive social services that reach vulnerable populations throughout Northwest Missouri.  Their various ministries reach people of all ages, including infants, children, families and senior citizens.

Travel Details:  We will depart PCWS following worship on Sunday, June 6.  For high school seniors whose graduation is on June 6th will join the group Monday, June 7th – airfare to Kansas City will be included in the cost.  We will work Monday – Friday, enjoy a fun day on Saturday, June 12, and return home on Sunday, June 13 in the mid-afternoon.

Location:  St. Joseph, MO – approximately 45 minutes north of Kansas City and 500 miles from Western Springs.

Nature of the Work:  We will be working on a variety of projects that help support the mission of InterServ, undertaking a major clean-up effort of some of their program space, doing home repair projects for elderly residents and completing a variety of maintenance projects on InterServ facilities.  Over the course of the week, we will also help in a soup kitchen cook a meal at a homeless shelter.  Each day will be different and full.  Evenings will be balanced between fun and learning opportunities.

Cost:  $195 per person.  Cost includes transportation, lodging, food, work supplies, free day activities and a T-shirt.  Fundraisers and PCWS mission committee subsidize approximately 50% of the actual cost for the trip.

Lodging:  We will be staying in the youth center at Brookdale Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph  Participants will be sleeping in air conditioned classrooms with air mattresses on the floor.  The youth center has showers, a kitchen where we will prepare our meals, a gymnasium and game room.
