Environmental Covenant

As members of the church of Jesus Christ, we the people of the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs are instructed by the Word. "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein." (Psalm24.01)

I. There is an environmental crisis in the United States and the world that threatens our human existence and the existence of other dimensions of creation.

II. We acknowledge with thanksgiving that the environment is a gift of God. We confess to be stewards of the earth and responsible to God for our attitude and activities.

III. We commit ourselves to act with environmental awareness and sensitivity as responsible stewards in our congregational life.

IV. We encourage our members to be environmentally aware and responsible in their individual, family, and corporate lives.

V. We will seek relationships and responsibilities for environmental awareness and action with others in our communities and churches.

Therefore, as members of the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs:

  • We will educate one another about ways in which we can help conserve our environment.
  • We will employ more energy efficient methods of operating the church and manse.
  • We will make every effort to reduce contamination of the environment, recycle whatever possible and curtail the use of environmentally harmful chemicals and unsafe products.
  • We will conserve as much energy, materials and resources as possible.

We adopt this Covenant in concert with our Creator and Redeemer, who alone is Lord of Creation.
